On Sunday, June 21, 2009, members of the Tae E. Lee Kanata Taekwondo School joined forces to raise over $7,400.00 for the Ottawa Regional Cancer Foundation. Master David Silverman, head instructor, and his students, participated in the Alterna Do It For Dad! Run and Family Walk, an annual event which raises funds for prostate cancer research and services.

There were 1479 individual participants registered in this event, and Master Silverman was ranked as 3rd place fundraiser! There were over 70 teams registered, and the Kanata Team was 5th place in fundraising revenue!

Master David Silverman, 4th Degree Black Belt, has been teaching Tae E. Lee Taekwondo in Kanata for over 13 years, instilling important principles in his students, including: having respect for yourself and others, and supporting your family and community.

Master Silverman was inspired to participate in the Alterna Do It For Dad! event in honour of his father, Steve Waserman, who recently lost his short and sudden battle with cancer. “We were shocked by the sudden news that my dad had cancer, and devastated by the prognosis,” says Silverman, “We couldn’t believe it was happening to our family, someone we loved so dearly.”

Steve was an invaluable asset to the development and promotion of the Tae E. Lee Kanata Taekwondo school. He was an instructor, who touched the lives of many of Kanata Taekwondo students through individual teaching, promoting the importance of healthy living.

Master Silverman organized this collaborative effort amongst his students and their families, to raise awareness and educate others on the importance of early detection and cancer prevention – cancer can affect any of us at any time. The Ottawa Regional Cancer Foundation is committed to increasing cancer survivorship throughout our region.  According to the Foundation, prostate cancer is the most common form of cancer in Canadian men. More shocking, one in three area residents will receive a cancer diagnosis in their lifetimes; by 2010 that number is expected to reach one in two. Money raised by the Ottawa Cancer Foundation remains local, to ensure the continued advancement of cancer treatment and vital research in our community.

The Tae E. Lee Taekwondo program philosophy has so many components necessary to help you live a healthy life, including; the physical benefits of exercise, the mental benefits of stress-reduction, and the etiquette and philosophy. “Steve was responsible for introducing me as a young boy to Taekwondo. We joined together and trained together for 25 years! I am so grateful that he started me on this path of knowledge. I owe the person I am to him, “says Master Silverman, “Giving back to the Foundation was the least I could do, to honour my father today, and help others for tomorrow.”

“If I could pass on one lesson to people, it would be: Do It for Dad not only on father’s day – but everyday. Do It for Mom, Do It for your Brother, Sister, Family, Friends, and strangers. Be the best son, daughter, parent, sibling, or friend you can be, today and everyday. Live each day with courtesy and respect for yourself, and everyone you meet,” says Master Silverman.

“Of course, I am a strong supporter of the Ottawa Regional Cancer Foundation, and I encourage people to support the Foundation and/or other charitable organizations in our community,” says Master Silverman. To make a donation to the Foundation, visit www.ottawacancer.ca or www.alternadifd.ca.
